For such a small town Moretonhampstead boasts an impressive range of artists and studios.   Moretonhampstead also has its own forge which is open to the public and takes commissions: Moreton Forge.

The Moretonhampstead Development Trust worked with  Roger Dean on an ambitious programme of public art known as Dartmoor Flight.. The first phase, funded by an Arts Lottery A4E Express grant, resulted in the children's sculpture now mounted on the wall of the Parish Hall.

The second phase, with support from the Arts Lottery, LEADER II and other funders  created:

  • sculptures based on a Dartmoor theme on Pound Street (shown here)
  • a sparrowhawk sculpture on the wall in The Square
  • a mosaic based on the life of George Parker Bidder
  • a community project to develop banners to hang in The Square on special occasions
  • an audio play, developed by the MED Theatre company, telling the stories behind some of the works
  • improvements around the Town Centre, including designs built into railings, new seats, and access improvements for people with disabilities.

The Pound Street and sparrowhawk sculptures were carried out by Roger Dean, the Lead Artist.  The following artists were selected by a competitive process for the other commissions:
