The Moretonhampstead  History Society was founded as the Moretonhampstead Local History Society in 1965. It is involved with discovering and disseminating information about the area of Moretonhampstead and its hinterland, and in educating local people and visitors about matters of general historical interest. One of the early chairmen was Mrs Leadbitter, wife of Moreton's Rector, who contributed a considerable amount to our archive material. Other notable researchers have been Richard Heath, author of 'Sparrowhawk', Ken and Ann Theobald, and George Friend, a long time Committee member and author of 'Memories of Moreton'.

With a thiving membership  of nearly a  hundred,  the Society holds monthly lectures and arranges two annual field trips to sites of historical interest in the  South-West area. The Society gathers archival material in both original form and in digital copies, and has published booklets on local history themes.

The Society has its own website where you can find its programme, contact details, articles on all aspects of Moretonhampstead's history and several searchable databases of great use to genealogists and family historians. Click here to link to our website at  http://www.moretonhampstead.org.uk
