Art History with Dan Shread
A fascinating course covering the history of art and giving you the opportunity to find out about different eras and their influence on modern day art. This course will take a journey exploring the techniques, materials, methods, subjects and themes employed by western painters from the early renaissance Italian and Flemish masters to the present day. Over the weeks we shall see how painters have progressed starting with the development of perspective and how this coincided with the growth of Humanist ideas in Renaissance Europe.
We will then look at how this movement towards ever increasing freedom of expression led to Romanticism and the Modernist schools and the Avant Garde of the 20th Century. Finally we will look at how, by this century, artists are encouraged to have challenging ideas but at the same time are embraced and supported by the society that encourages them . This is a beginners course and in no way requires any previous knowledge or experience, all that is required is the desire to find out more about painting and its history. Includes lively discussion. Some book list will be advised.

The first half of the session we will look at the materials used for water colour, the variety of paper, brushes and paints that can be used. We will be looking at mark making, various water colour painting techniques and washes, and the different methods used to create certain images.(i.e shadows, reflections in sunlight and creating a distance in landscape).
The second half of the session Olivia will set up a still life with fruit and flowers for those happy to explore composition. For the students who would like to paint just one or two objects there will be plenty to inspire them, or you can bring in your own objects that you've always wanted to paint. If you have a favourite scene or landscape that you'd like to paint bring photos and pictures along so that Olivia can show you how to express it in paint.
Some materials will be provided for such as paper, easels and pencils. We do have some paints that students can experiment with but it is recomended that you bring your own paints.
