Moortrees Charity in Moreton

Moortrees: Tree Charity Who are We?

We are a Devon-based woodland charity working in and around Dartmoor National park. We work with local people to create and restore native woodland.

Our AIMS are to:

• Create new, and enable natural regeneration of, native woodland

• Build social cohesion through volunteering

• Provide high quality education and training

How do we do this? We work with local individuals, groups and businesses to collect local seed to grow local provenance trees in our community tree nurseries before planting in our woodlands. Our Woodlands Service gives free advice and trees to landowners for the planting and regeneration of native woodlands. We offer programmes in education, training and research.

What are Moortrees doing in Moreton?

We meet with volunteers on a monthly basis on the last Sunday in the month 11am – 4pmish. We have great fun and produce strong oak trees. Teas and terrific home made cakes are always provided. We are an action group. This means we don’t spend ages talking about what to do, we get on and do it. We run a successful tree nursery specialising in penduculate and sessile oak. We collect our own acorns from ancient woodlands close to Moreton and Chagford. Seed collections involve the local scout groups and interested residents. We take part in a number of scientific assessments with guidance from the Moortrees office and OPAL.

Our local contact number is: 01647 441032.
