Development of the Old Primary School
THE OLD PRIMARY SCHOOL: SUCCESS AFTER FIVE YEARS
We very pleased to report that, after five years' hard work, we have raised the funds and secured the agreements we need for this project to go ahead. This is to convert the school to provide a youth centre (much needed since the demise of the Plymouth Inn centre) and a visitor attraction (an arts and heritage gallery) which we hope will have a spin-off for businesses and other facilities throughout the town. It is planned to be self-financing through the letting of studios for artists and craftspeople, offices and workshops for businesses; and for the Parish Council in a new more accessible office.
I would like to thank all those who helped bring this about. Besides the dedication of our part-time manager Julia Darby, there has been a huge amount of voluntary work by our Board members, and others, and a substantial amount of money raised from our community appeal.
In the past few weeks we have been successful in our final funding application, and we have signed a 35-year lease with Devon County Council. We have conducted tenders for the building work and have chosen the bidder whose price is within our budget, and is reasonably local. We are about to sign the contract so that work can start in January and be completed in about six months. We will be doing everything we can to minimise the disruption this causes.
If you would like to...
- be one of the artists or business people to use the new centre
- discuss using it for a new local service
- have ideas about the use of the Youth Centre or the Gallery
